Creating a QR code: what to settle first

A QR code is nothing more than a piece of text in picture form. What it contains decides what happens on scanning: an address opens the website, a vCard block offers to save the contact, a Wi-Fi block connects the phone to the network. The guides above therefore differ less in the tool than in the content they write into the code.

The most important decision comes before printing: static or dynamic. A static code carries its content inside itself. It works without a server, never expires and costs nothing, but cannot be changed after printing. If it contains the wrong number or the website moves, the printed run is waste paper. A dynamic code contains only a short address whose destination can be swapped at any time. Wherever something is printed in a larger run or stays up for a long time, it is the cheaper option, even though it costs money at first.

In print, two factors decide legibility: the edge length in relation to the reading distance, and the contrast. One tenth of the distance as edge length is a reliable rule of thumb; dark on light is the safe combination. The fewer characters in the code, the coarser the pattern and the smaller it can be printed. That is why it pays to shorten addresses and, for contact details, to include only the fields that are really needed.

All codes on these pages are created directly in your browser. For static codes, the data you enter never leaves your device; no account or email address is needed. Dynamic codes and their scan statistics are stored on servers in Frankfurt; counting is anonymous and sets no cookie on the scanning device.

Frequently asked questions

Is creating a QR code free?
Static QR codes are free and unlimited with us, without sign-up and without watermarks. You only pay for the dynamic code, whose destination can be changed afterwards: €4.99 one-time, no subscription.
What is the difference between a static and a dynamic QR code?
With a static code, the content is in the pattern itself. It works without a server and forever, but cannot be changed after printing. The dynamic code contains only a short address whose destination you can swap at any time. The printed code stays the same; the destination behind it changes.
How large does a QR code need to be printed?
As a rule of thumb, the edge length should be about one tenth of the distance from which it is scanned. On a business card, 2 cm is enough; on a table stand, 3 cm; on a poster read from two meters, more like 20 cm. A quiet area of at least four module widths should remain free all around.
PNG or SVG: which format should I use?
SVG for everything that gets printed, because it scales without loss and every print shop can work with it. PNG for screens, presentations and email. When in doubt, download both; they cost nothing.
Does the QR code expire at some point?
A static code never expires because it needs nothing except the camera. Our dynamic codes are paid once and keep running without follow-up costs. With subscription providers, by contrast, the code expires as soon as payment stops, and the printed material becomes worthless.
Is personal data collected when scanning?
No. For dynamic codes we count anonymously: time, approximate country, device type. No IP storage, no cookie on the scanning device, no profile. Hosting is in Frankfurt.

Nothing that fits?

The generator turns any text and any address into a QR code. Static for free, dynamic for €4.99 one-time.
