Route 1: Instagram's built-in QR code (Nametag)
Instagram has had its own QR code in the profile since 2018, first called "Nametag", since 2022 simply "QR code".
Where to find it:
- Open the Instagram app
- Go to your profile (bottom right)
- Menu ☰ top right
- Select "QR code"
- The code is displayed. You can adjust background color and style
Downside: only works through the Instagram app. Anyone scanning with the normal camera app sees a web page saying "open Instagram to view". That frustrates some users.
Route 2: Universal QR code for your Instagram profile
If you want to print the code on a business card, a poster, a flyer or your shop window, you need a code that works with every camera app.
Step 1: Build your profile URL
https://instagram.com/YOUR_HANDLE
Example: https://instagram.com/qrkontor leads directly to @qrkontor.
Step 2: Enter the URL in the generator
In the generator above → "URL" mode → paste the URL → the QR code updates live.
Step 3: Branding (recommended for business cards)
- Your own logo in the middle (PNG with transparent background)
- Brand colors for foreground and background
- A "dots" pattern instead of classic squares looks more modern
Step 4: Download
PNG for normal print, SVG for vector workflows (for example if you want to edit the code further in Adobe Illustrator).
What often goes wrong with Instagram QR codes
Printing the code too small
If the code on a business card is smaller than 1.5 × 1.5 cm (0.6 × 0.6 in), many phones fail to scan it. Rule of thumb: at least 2 × 2 cm (0.8 × 0.8 in), better more.
Branding the code with the Instagram logo
The Instagram logo (the camera glyph) is trademarked. Do not use it directly in the QR code, even if it works technically. Instead: your own logo or a neutral "@" symbol. If you want Instagram branding anyway, check Meta's brand guidelines first.
Linking to a Reel or post instead of the profile
If you link to a Reel, the link is dead years later when the Reel goes offline. Link to the profile, that is where the current content always lives.
For business cards: vCard with Instagram link
A QR code that only points to Instagram is a waste when someone scans your business card. They usually want email, phone and website too. Solution: a digital business card (vCard) with the Instagram link in the website field.
A code like that:
- Saves the contact to the address book immediately
- Links Instagram, LinkedIn, website and email
- Looks better than five different QR codes side by side
FAQ
Does the QR code work without the Instagram app?
Yes, with the universal code (Route 2). The iPhone or Android browser opens instagram.com/handle on the web and shows the profile there. Users without the app still see your posts (with a prompt to download the app).
Can I create a QR code for a single post?
Yes, the URL is https://www.instagram.com/p/POST_ID/. Paste that URL into the generator. Careful: posts can be deleted later, then the code is dead.
Is my Instagram handle sent to you? No. The QR code is generated entirely in your browser. We never see the URL.
Can I put the Instagram logo in the code? Trademark gray area. We recommend your own logo in the middle. If you want Instagram branding anyway, stick to Meta's brand guidelines.
What if I change my Instagram handle later? With a static code: the code is dead, all printed material worthless. With a dynamic QR code you swap the destination in the dashboard, the code stays. Perfect for printed business cards.
What QR code size for printed flyers?
- Business card (scanning distance 20 cm, 8 in): at least 2 × 2 cm (0.8 × 0.8 in)
- A5 or half-letter flyer (50 cm, 20 in): at least 3 × 3 cm (1.2 × 1.2 in)
- A1 or 24 × 36 in poster (1.5 m, 5 ft): at least 10 × 10 cm (4 × 4 in)
When a dynamic QR code pays off
If you have an Instagram code on printed material (business card, poster, flyer) and later change your handle, delete your account or move to a new platform, a static code puts it all in the bin. With a dynamic code from QR Kontor (€4.99 one-time) you swap the destination at any time, the printed code stays valid. Compared with the $49 to $197 that other providers charge for a "lifetime" code: ours is a short redirect with nothing stored beyond the target URL, on EU hosting, which is why the one-time price holds.
Need a dynamic QR code?
Change the target any time, even after printing. €4.99 one-time, no subscription.
